  Sedatives and anesthesia are used for different reasons. Unlike anesthesia, sedation dentistry focuses on relieving a patient’s nervousness and anxiety during a dentist's visit, while anesthesia eliminates pain and discomfort. Patients with severe anxiety typically need a sedative before receiving an injection of anesthesia, especially if they have a fear of needles.   The administration of local anesthesia, sedation and general anesthesia is an integral part of dental practice. The American Dental Association is committed to the safe and effective use of these modalities by appropriately educated and trained dentists. The purpose of these guidelines is to assist dentists in the delivery of safe and effective.

General anesthesia. refers to a procedure that is performed after. administration of a medication(s) that results in analgesia, paralysis and unconsciousness. General anesthesia begins with the preanesthetic evaluation and lasts until complete anesthetic recovery is attained. Sedation. involves the administration of a pharmaceutical to. Local anesthesia is defined as a loss of sensation in a circumscribed area of the body caused by a depression of excitations of nerve endings or an inhibition of the conduction process in the peripheral nerves. Local anesthetic drugs are routinely administered for oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.
